On June 17, 2021, Governor David Ige appointed Representative Lynn DeCoite to fill the State Senate (District 7) seat that’s been vacant since the May 1 retirement of Sen. Kalani English. District 7 includes Hana, East, and upcounty Maui, Molokaʻi, Lanaʻi, and Kahoʻolawe.

"Congratulations to Representative DeCoite! We know she will serve with passion and distinction as a Senator, just as she has served her constituents of the Maui, Moloka'i, and Lanaʻi communities for the last 6 years," stated House Majority Leader Della Au Belatti.

The vacancy in the House of Representatives will now be filled pursuant to HRS Section 17-4 that provides that the Democratic Party shall submit a list of three prospective appointees to the Governor within 30 calendar days following the first day of the vacancy. Governor Ige will then have 60 calendar days following the first day of the vacancy to make an appointment for the vacant House District 13 seat.
