HONOLULU, HAWAIʻI - The Hawaiʻi State Legislature mourns the passing of former U.S. Representative and Hawaiʻi State Senate President Colleen Hanabusa, a trailblazing leader and devoted public servant whose lifetime of service leaves a profound legacy for Hawaiʻi and its people.
Throughout her distinguished career, Hanabusa dedicated herself to public service with unwavering conviction and a deep sense of responsibility to the communities she represented. She made history as the first woman to serve as President of the Hawaiʻi State Senate, becoming the first woman to lead either chamber of the Hawaiʻi State Legislature and the first woman of color in the United States to serve as president of a state senate.
Known for her strength, integrity, and steadfast advocacy, she worked tirelessly to ensure that the voices of her constituents on the Leeward Coast were heard and represented. She later carried that same passion and determination to Washington D.C., where she served the people of Hawaiʻi in the United States House of Representatives.
Senate President Ronald D. Kouchi said, “Colleen was a brilliant legislator and tireless advocate for the people of Hawaiʻi, and I was honored to call her a friend.”
House Speaker Nadine Nakamura shared, “Colleen has inspired many, including myself, and was always so gracious in offering advice to the next generation of leaders.”
Hanabusa’s legacy is one of service, perseverance, and principled leadership. She mentored many who followed in her footsteps, and her influence helped shape policies and institutions that continue to impact our state today. Hawaiʻi is stronger because of her dedication and her willingness to stand up for what she believed was right.
On behalf of the Hawaiʻi State Senate and the House of Representatives, we extend our deepest condolences to her family, friends, and all who were touched by her remarkable life and service. Her legacy of leadership, resilience, and dedication to Hawaiʻi will continue to inspire generations to come.
