Honolulu, Hawaiʻi – Representative Darius K. Kila is pleased to announce that following his formal request to the Hawai‘i Department of Transportation (HDOT) to extend the public comment period and expand outreach for its draft Energy Security and Waste Reduction Plan, HDOT has agreed to extend the comment period by one month, through Sunday, August 31, and will increase engagement efforts with rural and underserved communities.
The request, submitted on July 17, 2025, via letter to HDOT Director Ed Sniffen and Energy Security & Community Outreach Manager Laura Ka‘akua, was signed by eight of the nine members of the House Committee on Transportation in a bipartisan effort to strengthen community input and legislative transparency.
“The public is strongly urged to participate and share their feedback during this extended comment period,” said Representative Darius K. Kila, Chair of the House Committee on Transportation. “Our letter served as a catalyst for this extension, and we’re encouraged that the Department heard our concerns and responded. This plan affects everyone, and it’s critical that voices from all communities are included in the process.”
In its July 25, 2025 response, HDOT confirmed it will:
Extend the public comment period to August 31, 2025;
Incorporate public feedback where appropriate; and
Publish the final plan by October 15, 2025
How the Public Can Participate:
Members of the public are encouraged to review the plan and submit comments via the HDOT platform. Review the plan here: HDOT Draft Energy Security and Waste Reduction Plan
